38th Annual Emeryville Art Exhibition

(EMERYVILLE, CA, AUGUST 23, 2024) Emeryville Celebration of the Arts, Inc. is proud to announce the 38th Annual Emeryville Art Exhibition, a juried show featuring more than 200 artworks created by 154 Emeryville artists. The exhibition is open October 5 – 27, 2024, from 11am to 6 pm, Wednesdays through Sundays at Public Market Emeryville, located at 5905 Shellmound Street, Emeryville, CA. The opening night reception at 6 pm, Friday, October 4, offers the opportunity to meet the artists and get the first look at the artwork on display, with music by The doRiaN Mode: Vintage Jazz & Blues; no-host bar raises funds for the Emeryville Youth Art Program. Admission to the reception and exhibition is free. For details, directions, and Emery-go-round stop information, log onto www.emeryarts.org or call 510/652-6122.

Celebrating Emeryville’s vibrant arts community, the Annual Art Exhibition showcases the depth of talent and diverse artistic expression of both emerging and established artists that live or work in Emeryville. Selected as one of California's fourteen state-designated Cultural Districts, Emeryville represents an innovative enclave devoted to art and creative production. The exhibition is an important example of community cooperation engaging artists, businesses, community members and city government and continues to serve as the annual celebration of this collective creativity.

The artwork for the exhibition is selected by a jury of Bay Area art professionals. The jurors conduct in-person visits to art studios and work spaces to meet the artists and view their work. Online submissions are also accepted. This year’s result is an expansive, exciting, and carefully curated show featuring more than 200 works from over 150 artists, representing the largest group show in its 38-year history, with an influx of new artists participating for the first time along with established high profile artists that have returned to show their work again.

“Emeryville claims only a very small, albeit beautiful, slice of the Bay but its creative community continues to grow as evidenced by this year’s enormous show with many new voices and visions,” said Sharon Wilchar, exhibition co-ordinator. “And our city’s artistic roots run deep as established artists who have lived here for years, decades, look forward to their part each fall in the annual celebration. Many of these artists have experienced national and even international success yet still come ‘home’ to contribute to the exhibition. Several of note this year after time away are photographer Richard Misrach, mixed-media and installation artist Robert Ortbal, and jeweler Bassem Elias. It is so exciting for me to see their new work alongside emerging artists that are submitting work for the first time.”

Open to artists of all media, the 2024 contributing artists include painters Teresa Kalnoskas, M. Louise Stanley, John W Wood, Suzanne Anderson-Carey, and Lisa Rock; clay artists Ciera Christin Martinez, James Morris, and Cuong Ta; photographers John Lund, Richard Misrach, Michael Teresko, and Jeannie O'Connor; printmakers Courtney Sennish, and Kazuko Watanabe; Michele Théberge, Mari Andrews, and Robert Ortbal working in mixed media; sculptors John Whitehead, Scott Donahue, Ken Kalman,Heather Van Winkle, and Roger Bash; textile artists Rachel Dosh; jeweler Bassem Elias; and furniture makers Alison J. McLennan, and Roberto Gastelumendi. The works in the 38th Annual Art Exhibition are for sale.

Independent curator and exhibition designer Kathleen Hanna serves as curator and juror, now in her 13th year with the Exhibition. “Thirty percent of the artists exhibiting this year are new to the juried exhibition, which is open to all artists living or working in Emeryville,” explains Hanna. “This is wonderful news and confirms that the project is alive and well and an important contribution to the community life of Emeryville.”

The 2024 guest jurors are Vicky Kumpfer, Public Art Consultant and Kristen Zaremba, Public Art Coordinator, Cultural Affairs Division, City of Oakland.

“Emeryville is an artists’ community at heart—there’s no denying that,” said juror Kristen Zaremba. “Meeting so many diverse artists, reviewing their work and gaining insight into their creative processes was life-affirming. It was a pleasure and an honor to be a part of the selection process. The exhibition is truly a celebration of the creative, curious and courageous spirit of these Emeryville artists.”

As a former Arts Manager for the City of Santa Rosa, juror Vicky Kumpfer was impressed with Emeryville’s dedication to fostering a vibrant art economy. “It is evident in the range and caliber of the art we saw, that this community support provides opportunities and promotes growth for its artists,” said Kumpfer. “I enjoyed meeting the artists and seeing their creative work and passion for what they do.”

Along with the impressive collection of visual art, the Annual Exhibition continues to recognize the contributions of Emeryville’s performance and literary artists. Nancy Karp + Dancers will perform a new site-specific work in the exhibition gallery. Emeryville’s former Poet Laureate Sarah Kobrinsky will lead an ekphrastic poetry writing workshop and reading, with poems inspired by the collection of works on display. The dance performance, poetry workshop (limited number) and reading are open to the public, for dates and details visit www.emaryarts.org.

Each year the exhibition space is donated by a local Emeryville business. For the third year in a row, Oxford Properties Group has generously offered the space for the Annual Exhibition at Public Market Emeryville. Situated at the south end of this lively artisan food destination, exhibition visitors will find ample parking and dining options.

The Annual Emeryville Art Exhibition is sponsored by Emeryville Celebration of the Arts, Inc. The mission of the non-profit Emeryville Celebration of the Arts, Inc. is to foster an appreciation of the arts and artists of Emeryville, to promote the city as a culturally vital and progressive center for living and working, and, most recently, to partner with the City of Emeryville in the Rotten City Emeryville Cultural Arts District, a program of the California Arts Council. The Annual Emeryville Art Exhibition continues to support this mission by providing a free public venue, open to all, to experience the rich diversity of artistic expression of those who live and work within the city of Emeryville.
