Artist Statement
I create functional ceramic sculptures with colored porcelain. In my work I strive to create containers that not only hold and display objects but also, as they interact with the world, absorb the stories and worlds from the objects collected within them. I am fascinated by how humans abstract the world around us, the act of connecting, personifying, and imbuing significance onto the physical world. I make these containers to celebrate the inherent human desire to collect by creating a home for these objects, even if temporary. Each piece becomes a bridge, a portal, anchoring the significance of objects that hold special meaning for individuals and bridging the gap between the abstracted meaning and the tangible. In a world of symbolism and magic, I seek to elevate the everyday and provide space for personal connections and everyday rituals. I hope my work serves as a reflection of what it means to be human and the powerful ways in which we navigate our existence through the objects we hold and create.
I wrote an essay on the creation of Me & You that was published here: https://dhandlib.org/2024/04/29/developing-a-creative-practice-with-ceramic-data-physicalizations/ if you are curious.
